Trending in 2014...10 Things

It's the beginning of a new year and as always, designers/trendsetters/tastemakers or whatever you want to call such types are jumping trying to answer the proverbial 'what's hot for 2104' question.

Some of these peeps claim to always be ahead of the curve, flaunting that they themselves are the people that set such trend trains in motion.

Others like to simply post what they see happening.

When people ask me this question, I always find it SO difficult...I think it's the articulation of such thoughts/feelings that I find hardest.

For me, design to be one of those things that I just sort of see...like I know what I like and how to put it together but if you asked me how to do it, I'd find that hard...it's sort of just something my brain inherently understands, much like some are good at numbers or others football etc.

So when it comes to predicting what will be hot in the new year, I have no blinking idea really.

What I can tell you though, is what I'm liking.

Do I suppose to say that what I like is what's going to be the next biggest thing...absolutely not.

Do I hope you all like it?  Yes in so far as you admire what I'm throwing out there and find it interesting...maybe so much so that you want to hire me to design some stuff for you etc.

Do I want to be someone who is thought of as an 'expert' in such things...sure...do I care about such labels or get upset when they are bestowed on others, nope.

It's all so arbitrary really and I'm good with that...one person's 'expert' can be another person's 'amateur'...someone who is 'new to the field' can be considered fresh and innovate, while a person with more 'experience' can be stale...I say potatoe, you say potatoe...who the hell cares?

Some people do and honestly, I don't relate.

Why we can't all just be happy to build each other up, I'll never understand but I digress.

Full circling back to what I started talking about before I went on a little tangent, is this whole 'what's hot' business.

Again, I have no idea.

I know the things I don't find new or fresh (i.e. most notably chevrons) but past that, don't know...don't really care.

What I hope to do is just have a voice...one that's recognizably mine and that's what the new website is really all about...capturing 'me' in a nutshell so that hopefully, you'll like it and want to read the blog/hire me for work.

And to that end, here's what it probably won't be much of surprise when I tell you that right now, I'm loving all this stuff, and have been for a while:

  4. First off, a big congrats on the new gig! I think you're a natural for TV & can't wait to see more of your style and work on this new platform. Hard to pick a favourite from your top 10...probably the moulding & patterned floors. Your style is unique and fabulously fierce (let's face it, not everyone can make '80's ugly' look good!)...some people just might not get it, but a whole lot of us do and really love it! You're sincere and true to what you love, which people relate to. All the best for 2014!

  5. Congratulations on the TV gig! they are lucky to have you. You're a natural on TV and the creativity that is in you shines through. As a side note, don't let others ruffle your feathers. I'm sure there is some quote poster on pinterest that will say what I'm trying to say a lot more eloquently, but basically, spring clean your twitter / follow list and only let in positive stuff. xo

  6. I love what you wrote up top! I agree. Who the hell cares what's "hot" or new" for 2014..it's about having good taste. And you have excellent taste! I love your design sense. I'd rather see someone with excellent design taste such as yourself just tell me what they like (not just for now, but for always), than some supposed trend-forecaster tell me what's "trending."
